Fuel for the Fire: Rediscovering Purpose in Fundraising

Some days in this work feel like a highlight reel. The campaign closes ahead of schedule. You blow your goals out of the water. A donor says, “I’ve been waiting for someone to ask me that.” You get the goosebumps. The “this is why I do this” moment.

And then there are the other days.

The days when the campaign clock is ticking louder than your coffee maker. When a donor ghosts you. When your board thinks your gala will pay for the entire strategic plan. When you wonder if selling artisanal candles might be less stressful.

This is where WHY matters most.

Your “why” isn’t just your mission statement — it’s the spark that lit this fire in you.

  • It’s the child who found safety in the shelter where you work.
  • It’s the veteran whose life you helped save, because you raised critical funding.
  • It’s the arts student who finally saw herself as more than a statistic.

These are the programs we support…and so many more.

Here’s the truth: fundraising will break your heart and fill it back up again — often before lunch. If you lose sight of your why, the “no’s” will outweigh the “yeses.”

So, this week, take five minutes to write about your WHY — in real words, not polished brochure copy. Keep it on your desk, in your phone, or taped to your dashboard. Look at it when you feel the cracks forming. Because here’s the thing: the more connected you are to your why, the more authentic your asks will be. And donors can feel it. Every. Single. Time

YES in Action:

Text one colleague today: “Here’s my why — what’s yours?” Watch how it changes the conversation and your whole outlook for the day.

To the Emerging Leader: You Were Made for This

There is a letter I have been composing in my head for years. Not to a board member. Not to a CEO. Not to the donor who didn’t call back or the campaign that almost made it. This one is for you. I have been in this field long enough to have watched people arrive […]

Letters We Never Send: When Good Fundraisers Leave

Every year, nonprofits across the country lose talented, mission-driven fundraisers—not because they stopped caring, but because they stopped feeling cared for. The cost is staggering: recruitment, onboarding, lost donor momentum, and a cycle that keeps repeating itself. What if your fundraiser could tell you the truth on their way out the door? This is the […]

Our Love-Hate Relationship with Nonprofit Galas

At the nonprofit where I serve as VP of Advancement, we just wrapped our annual signature event. For 72 hours, I let myself sit in it. The energy. The stories. The moments when someone leans in and says, “This night was magical!” You can feel when an event lands the way you hoped it would. […]

This is a brilliant book for anyone in fundraising or anyone who wants to make a career in this important and challenging field. Kimberly Dye is a successful advancement leader who has many great stories of how you can turn every contact into a “yes.”

David Drobis Retired Chairman and CEO of Ketchum Worldwide

Wow, just the leadership needed at this time! In a world, where uncertainty shakes us about, environmental disasters come thick and fast and economic progress has slowed except for sales of military equipment, Kimberly is offering us fresh insights into how to make unique sustainable partnerships. Long term partnerships with repeat donations, opportunities for collaborative weaving of multi-layered giving to create a systematic approach to building outcomes that count. This book is a must for my top shelf reads this Spring.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the first pages of your book, laughing and nodding along as so much of it resonates with my day-to-day work. Your refreshing take and the simplicity with which you address the fear of the ask really struck a chord and aligns beautifully with my work as a MG consultant and advisor, especially when working with Board members who often look like they’d prefer to disappear under the table when we talk about 'the ask'. In fact, I don't even use that term anymore, I actually phrase it much along the same lines as you 'getting to the yes' or sometimes 'getting to the no', which can be equally important!

I wanted to congratulate you on capturing the essence of our work. Your words were sincere, authentic, and donor-focused. I plan to use your books with several clients. There isn't a better resource to guide fundraising that I've seen in our field.

The FLCC Foundation held its first-ever Board Retreat. We came prepared with the assigned reading - "Getting to the Yes: A Board Member's Guide to Philanthropic Leadership" by Kimberly Dye, M.S., M.Ed. This book is worth picking up if you serve on a board.
